Foxtail Removal and Mulch Restoration
Foxtail grass has taken over many of the tree wells along 45th St, and it’s more than an eyesore. Its dried seeds can embed in pets’ fur and skin, causing painful infections and costly vet visits. By mulching the tree wells to block regrowth and clearing the foxtail, we’ll make the street healthier for pets and more attractive for residents and visitors.
To avoid spreading seeds, we’ll mulch this fall and pull the foxtail in the spring.
Weekly Cleanups
One of our volunteers set up a Signup Genius form for picking up trash on 45th St. Choose a week and bring a few friends, or coordinate with a small group. We’ll provide all the supplies you need.
Planting and Block Parties
At our September block party, volunteers planted the bed in front of Harold’s Lighting, painted over graffiti at Yoroshiku and tidied the shrubs outside Jae Hun Kim Taekwon-Do Institute.
Heartfelt thanks to Harold’s Lighting, Swanson’s Nursery, Dunn Lumber, Yoroshiku, Mallory Paint, Cedarhouse Flowers and Jae Hun Kim for their donations, discounts and access to water.
What’s Next
This project is just the beginning. Future plans include:
- Adding native and ornamental plants to larger planting strips along N 45th St
- Partnering with local businesses to place small sidewalk planters that bring color to the corridor
Together, we can make our main street a greener, more vibrant community space.
